A brief look at hemp retail customers

Hemp Well’s experience is that there is very limited data on a pet owner’s motivation to purchase hemp products.

The following data is from The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association: Consumers’ Perceptions of Hemp Products for Animals, Spring 2016. Please note that information for the research was gathered through an online survey given to pet owners who bought products from that online hemp company. The research was conducted by the Department of Clinical Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University.

Physical and Mental
“Anecdotal reports from pet owners indicate that some find cannabis products helpful for pain, arthritis, seizures, anxiety, and inappetence in both dogs and cats. Another study summarized by the AVMA reported that pet owners are using cannabis to treat behavior-based disorders such as separation anxiety and noise phobia, in addition to problems affecting the body and mind such as irritable bowel syndrome, and management of pain, nausea, and seizures. Consequently, interest in cannabis as a therapeutic agent for animals is spreading, and veterinarians are fielding more requests from their clients about whether cannabis might help their pets. As is true for physicians, veterinarians are left relying on anecdotal reports, trial and error reports from clients, and companies’ claims.”

How did pet owners learn about hemp?
Internet (51%)
Friend (16%)
Veterinarian (14%)
49% of people in survey had talked with their veterinarian about hemp use.
61% of the veterinarians responded positively when asked by the owner about hemp for pets and only 8%
negatively.
